Mrs. Abanti Gopan is an alumnus of RAK College of Nursing, New Delhi, and LT College of Nursing, Mumbai, and completed her MPhil from Manipal College of Nursing. In addition, she has done many Clinical and academic programs like Enterostomal Therapy Course from Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai and Rehabilitation Techniques from Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Mumbai.
During her illustrious career of more than four decades, Mrs. Gopan has assumed several clinical, academic, and administrative positions in many prestigious institutions. She has worked as Staff Nurse in the CTVS unit of Sion Hospital, Mumbai; Enterostomal Therapist at Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai; Lecturer at LT College of Nursing; Nursing Coordinator at Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, and Director Nursing at BM Birla Heart Research Center, Kolkata and Kolkata Medical Research Institute; Nursing Director and PG Coordinator at Sahayadri College of Nursing, Mangalore; and Nursing Consultant at Tata Medical Center, Kolkata.
As an accomplished Nurse Educationist, Mrs. Abanti Gopan was instrumental in starting the INC approved PG Diploma Course in CVTS Nursing for the first time in the country in 1991 and the first MSc Nursing program in West Bengal in 2002 at B.M.Birla Heart Research Institute. She started the Emergency and Disaster Nursing Diploma Course at CMRI in 2001 and MSc in Oncology Nursing at Tata Medical Center in 2014.
She has started the Asian Association for Cardiac Nurses and was the pioneer Editor of the Asian Journal of Cardiac Nurses for 13 years. She had been Examiner, paper setter, research guide, and evaluator at BSc and MSc Nursing University examinations.
Mrs. Abanti Gopan has contributed immensely to the National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Healthcare Providers(NABH) since its inception in 2005 as a Principal Assessor and has served as a member of its Technical Committee and Faculty for NABH Training programs. She has played a pivotal role in developing NABH Standards for Nursing Excellence Certification in 2014.
She has presented many scientific papers at national and international conferences in the UK, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, and United States; has organized various seminars and workshops; and is a highly sought-after speaker in scientific forums.
Currently, she is a visiting Nursing Consultant and faculty to various hospitals and Nursing Colleges across the country, besides being Principal Assessor of NABH.
As a strong proponent of Nurse Empowerment, Mrs. Gopan has the unique distinction of being an accomplished Nurse Administrator and Educationist. Dr. Bimla Kapoor is an alumnus of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing, New Delhi, awarded the President’s Gold Medal from Delhi University. Besides their Masters in Psychiatric Nursing, she has done M Phil. in Nursing from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. She completed her Ph.D. in Education with a major in Nursing as the first scholar of IGNOU in 2005.
With an illustrious career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Bimla Kapoor is one of the most respected nurses in our country. She has played a pivotal role in starting the graduate Nursing program by IGNOU in distance education mode, thus helping thousands of Indian nurses to realize their dream of becoming nursing graduates. Under her leadership, IGNOU started Ph.D. in Nursing, PG Diploma In Nursing Administration, and extension of BSc Nursing in Nepal, Seychelles, and Doha. She was the first nurse to serve as the Director School of Health Sciences at IGNOU. Her contributions include Advisor in Nursing at Max Institute of Health Education and Research, Dean Health Skills at ILFS, establishing Health Skills Academy at Tripura, HLL Kerala, and Nemcare Guwahati for upskilling of nurses and doctors. Under HSSC, she was instrumental in launching General Duty Assistant Course all over India under Health Sector Skill Council. She has also worked with Berkeley Health Education as its Academic Dean.
Dr. Kapoor authored the Textbook of Psychiatric Nursing Vol I & II as the first Indian nurse author on the subject, besides contributing to chapters in many nursing textbooks. She has numerous research publications to her credit, has guided more than 20 Ph.D. scholars, and has written more than 300 articles. She has been on the editorial board of TNAI. She has rendered consultation in nursing to various national and international agencies and is a member of the Board of Studies and examinations at different universities. Her areas of expertise include Nursing Education, Research, Distance Education, Nursing Administration, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Counseling and behavioral skills, Curriculum Development, and pedagogical and evaluation strategies.
Dr. Kapoor was the founder and President of the Delhi Nursing Council and has been a prominent member of the Trained Nursing Association of India (TNAI) and Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing.
She is a recipient of many awards like the President’s Gold Medal and T. K. Adrenvala prize for best research during her student days, Nehru Foundation award for Excellence in Nursing, WHO Fellowship to Bangkok on Rational Use of Drugs in SEARO, NHS 50th Anniversary Fellowship by the British Council, Vijay Shree Award and Certificate of Excellence for outstanding contributions by India International Friendship Society and Centenary award for contribution in Nursing education and research by TNAI.
Dr. Kapoor is the Chairperson of the Expert Committee for National Nursing & Midwifery Commission Bill 2020, which will soon replace the Nursing Council Act 1947.

Mrs. Gracy Mathai is an alumnus of Lady Reading Health School, New Delhi; Post Basic BSc (N) from College of Nursing JJ Group of Hospitals Mumbai, and has a Diploma in Hospital Administration from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and MHRDM from Mumbai University. In addition, she is a Green Belt in Six Sigma Quality Management.
In her long career spanning close to half a century, Mrs. Gracy Mathai has done it all in Nursing - Staff Nurse, Nursing Tutor and Principal Tutor, Nursing Superintendent, and later Nursing Director of Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, MIMS Hospital, Kozhikode, GM Admin & HR, Chief Operating Officer of MIMS Kottakkal, Head Admin & Quality Aster Medcity, Kochi, Chief Quality Consultant, Aster DM Healthcare-India, Chief Quality Officer and later for last two years Chief Executive Officer, Baby Memorial Hospital, Kozhikode.
Mrs. Gracy Mathai has many achievements in Nursing to her credit. Mumbai Municipal Corporation chose her for Best Nursing Administrators Award in 1999 in recognition of implementing revolutionary changes in Nursing Administration. She was instrumental in changing the face of nursing by introducing a colorful shirt and trouser uniform at Lilavati Hospital in 1995 amid countrywide opposition, which hit the national headlines. She has hands-on expertise in commissioning greenfield hospitals.
Mrs. Gracy Mathai has been nationally recognized as an accomplished quality professional. Her contribution to the National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) from its inception in 2005 in various roles ranging from Principal Assessor, Member of Technical Committee and Accreditation Committee and faculty for training programs has been immense. She led MIMS Kozhikode to get the first NABH Accreditation in the Country, and Aster Medcity Kochi, where she worked as Chief Quality Officer, received ISO 9008, NABH, JCI accreditations within seven months of the hospital commencement. They have achieved Nursing Excellence, Green OT, HACCP, and Emergency and Lab accreditations.
Mrs. Gracy Mathai has also been very active in professional organizations. In the Trained Nurses Association of India, she has been the Secretary and President of the Maharashtra State Branch and served as its National Vice President from 2010 to 2014. She was the founder and President of the Indian Association of Critical Care Nurses and Inspector and Examiner of the Indian Nursing Council for GNM programs and Visiting Faculty Indian Institute of Workers' Education and All India Institute of Local Self Government, Mumbai.
